•As state sensitises students to resilience
Eko Boys to Men Association (EBTM), a non-governmental organisation, has stressed the need to mentor students on Lagos Island to encourage them to be responsible towards changing the narrative usually linked with residents of the area.
Speaking at a mentorship workshop, yesterday, for secondary school students in Education District III on the Lagos Island, Chairman, Membership and Welfare Committee of the group, Henry Shofowora, who represented the group Chairman, Effiong Ekon, said for Lagos Island to be perceived differently, it must begin by guiding youths from indulging in vices.
He said: “People believe Lagos Island is a slum but it is not. Most of us that are successful today started on this rough Lagos Island. This initiative is specifically targeted at the young minds to give them new narratives for them to have some good identity different from the perspectives of people who live on the Island.”
In his remarks, the guest speaker, Managing Director, LASACO Assurance PLC, Razzaq Abiodun, advised students to strive for excellence by committing themselves to hard work and learning.
He stressed the need for innovative skills among the students, noting that it would enhance their capacity building in different areas.The group’s Project Director, Peter Ehimhen, said the theme of the event, ‘Mentoring and Shaping the Future Leaders’ was aimed at changing the mindset of the students from becoming a better person in the society.
The District Counsellor Deputy Director, Rita Kienka, who represented the Tutor General of the district, Olufunke Oyetola, expressed appreciation to the group for seeking a better society through their initiative.
In another development, Lagos State Government, through its resilience office (LASO) has sensitised students across the state’s six education districts to urban and personal resilience.
The sensitisation is in collaboration with the Ministry of Basic and Secondary education. Speaking, yesterday, at a workshop on: “Nurturing resilience thinking in student of public secondary school: preparing for a changing world,” Chief Resilience officer, Dr. Folayinka Dania, explained the need to educate the students to develop resilience.
