Ibadan Circular Road: Oyo bets on mega project to boost economy, ease traffic

The Oyo State Commissioner for Public Works, Infrastructure and Transport, Abdulmojeed Mogbonjubola, says the ongoing Ibadan Circular Road project is central to the state’s efforts to boost its economy and reduce traffic congestion in the Ibadan metropolis.

Speaking during the Omituntun 2.0 Inter-Ministerial Press Briefing at the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Ibadan, Mogbonjubola explained that the first 32-kilometre stretch of the project, known as the South-East Wing, is expected to be completed before the end of the year. The segment runs from the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway to Badeku village on the Ibadan-Ile Ife Expressway.

He noted that the project, spanning 110 kilometres in total and named after former Governor Rashidi Ladoja, is designed to divert traffic from congested parts of the city and create new opportunities for residential and industrial development.

“This is one of the most significant infrastructure projects in Oyo State,” the commissioner said. “By the time we have the Circular Road in place, traffic issues around major areas such as the Iwo Road Interchange will be significantly reduced. The road will serve as a corridor for development, accommodating estates and industries.”

Mogbonjubola said the project is divided into four segments, with the South-East Wing currently at about 70 percent completion. The section is being constructed by two firms: Craneburg Construction Ltd (Lot 1) and Kopek Construction (Lot 2).

According to him, the 110-kilometre road will be the first of its kind in Nigeria to meet motorway standards, and the government intends to maintain it through tolling and a maintenance concession.

“There will be a weighbridge and tolling pad at the entrance near the Technical University (Tech-U). The road will have three to four toll points, and revenue generated will be used to maintain it. It’s built to a standard that should last 20 years without major repairs,” he added.

The commissioner also provided updates on other transport-related projects. He said the Iwo Road Mega Bus Terminal is nearing completion and is expected to modernise public transportation in the city.

He added that the state is deploying a new spike strip system to discourage wrong-way driving and restore order on the roads.

On the Agbowo Shopping Complex, Mogbonjubola assured that the project remains a priority, stating that the government is committed to following due process to ensure it is completed in a way that supports the state’s broader economic goals.

He said the administration has delivered 368.9 kilometres of roads across the state in the last two years, continuing its goal of connecting all zones and improving local infrastructure.
