Niger Delta Youth Congress condemns divisive rhetoric, advocates for national unity
The Niger Delta Youth Congress (NDYC) condemned the divisive and misleading rhetoric of the ReformINEC and SackYakubu movement.
In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Israel Uwejeyan, the NDYC noted that this movement’s statements and actions are counterproductive, inflammatory, and potentially damaging to Nigeria’s democracy.
According to the NDYC, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has made significant strides in improving Nigeria’s electoral process under the leadership of Professor Mahmood Yakubu.
It noted that the commission has made significant progress by adopting innovative technologies such as the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and electronic transmission of results to enhance transparency and curb electoral malpractice.
The NDYC urged Nigerians to reject unfounded narratives and focus on building a nation where fairness, justice, and unity prevail.
They noted that genuine reform is achieved through strategic advocacy and collaborative effort, not by maligning public officials without concrete evidence.
The group called on all Nigerians to reflect deeply on the potential consequences of the ReformINEC movement’s demands, which could create confusion, set back progress, and open the door for undue interference in the electoral process.
The statement reads: “We urge all political and advocacy groups to demonstrate responsibility and patriotism in their engagements. Criticism must be constructive, solutions-focused, and in the interest of the Nigerian people.
“The future of Nigerian democracy depends not on the dismantling of its institutions but on their strengthening through informed dialogue and active citizen participation.
“We remain committed to safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy, promoting electoral transparency, and fostering national development.
“We stand firmly against any attempt to derail the progress we have collectively achieved or to destabilise our democratic institutions under the guise of reform. Nigerians to reject unfounded narratives and focus on building a nation where fairness, justice, and unity prevail.”
