Indiscipline in correctional service must stop — Tunji-Ojo

Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has said that indiscipline and corruption among officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) must be dealt with to regain public trust and redeem the image of the agency.

The minister while speaking to the media on Friday in Abuja, said that the federal government under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu has zero tolerance for all forms of corruption.

Explaining further why two senior officers of the service were suspended to pave the way for investigation into the allegation of corruption related to detention out of the custodial facility, of popular crossdresser idris Okuneye also known as Bobrisky.

“We will not shield anybody regardless of who they are because indiscipline in the correctional service must stop. The investigation of the suspended corrections officers speaks volumes,” the minister said.

He pointed out that the federal government has “embarked on a number of infrastructural improvements in the correctional service to enhance operational efficiency and inmates’ welfare ”

Speaking on the intensive fight against economic saboteurs through illegal bunkering and vandalism of critical national assets and infrastructure, Dr. Tunji-Ojo said the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), has been relentless.

According to him, over the past year, we have arrested 2, 254 vandals and oil bunkers. 550 of them are currently under prosecution and 122 convictions have already been secured.

He added, “Reform of the private security sector has also yielded impressive results as 115 licensed companies are legally operating and the sector has generated an impressive revenue of N862, 620, 500”

The minister also said that the federal government has made tremendous progress in parenting with global agencies to combat transnational crimes such as human trafficking, irregular migration and smuggling through tightened and improved border surveillance by the Nigeria Immigration Service, (NIS).
