Jigawa Tanker Explosion: Kano Governor Mourns, Donates N100 million to victims’ families

Kano State Government has again demonstrated a true spirit of brotherliness and neighborhood with a donation of N100,000,000 (one hundred million) to relatives of victims of last week petrol tanker explosion in Jigawa State.

The unfortunate incident that hit the sleeping town of Majia, Taura local council of the neighboring state left about 140 residents burnt beyond recognition, while several others were left in the hospitals, with degrees of injuries.

Police revealed the tragedy ensued when a truck loaded with fuel heading to Nguru, Yobe State, from Kano had accident, while the oil spill littered around the community. Trouble, however, struck when the tanker exploded and the flame spread across the spillage where free scooping of the scarce resource was ongoing. It was a painful moment for the community as about 140 relatives who died during the incident were given a mass burial the next day.

Governor Yusuf who led members of his cabinet and other critical stakeholders on a condolence visit to Jigawa on Thursday met with his counterpart Alh. Umar Namadi Danmodi at the Government House in Dutse. Governor Yusuf emphasised that the donation was meant to provide relief to the families of those who lost their lives and to support the treatment of those currently in the hospital.

The governor, who highlighted the strong historical and cultural ties between Kano and Jigawa States, underscored his administration’s solidarity with the neighboring state during it’s time of grief. He also extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and those recovering from injuries, offering prayers for the Almighty to prevent future tragedies of this nature.

In his response, Governor Umar Namadi expressed deep gratitude to Kano State government on behalf of the people and government of Jigawa state. Namadi said the generous support from Kano would relieve the beneficiaries especially those that lost their breadwinners in the family, and pledged to ensure judicious disbursement of the funds to families of the accident victims.

This is not the first time Governor Yusuf is extending exceptional act of generosity to people and states in dire need of support. Recall that similar gesture was recently extended to Borno State government for humanitarian support after the terrible flooding as a result of Dam collapse in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
