Katsina to review free education policy, teacher recruitment process

The Katsina government has rolled out plans to review the free education policy and also update the teacher recruitment process in the state.

The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Hadiza Yar’adua made this known on Friday during her maiden briefing at the Katsina state Secretariat Complex.

Yar’adua during her address said this is one of Katsina’s goals in the year 2024 in a bid to improve education in line with the current realities of the North-West state.

According to her, part of the plans is to make sure that the Teacher’s Service Board performs its statutory functions of teacher recruitment and training.

Yar’adua maintained that the ministry is also planning to have a basic and secondary education sector that will provide efficient learning that will help to contribute towards socio-economic growth and development in Katsina state.

Other goals set up by the ministry, according to the commissioner, include among others: to have a basic and secondary education sector with improved curricula that impart basic skills in traditional subjects.

“To increase the coverage and quality of the basic and secondary education,” the commissioner added.

“To identify clear structures for enhancing the capacity of teachers with suitable incentives and punitive measures through robust monitoring and evaluation mechanisms.

“Providing effective and efficient framework and strategies to help His Excellency in designing and establishing three model schools to cater to the best and brightest candidates in the state.

“To maximize partner support of AGILE, TESS, and other partner projects to develop basic and secondary education in the State and make a positive impact,” she noted.

Yar’adua disclosed at the function that the ministry has also set up action plans which include short, medium and long-term plans aimed at increasing the coverage and quality of basic and secondary education in the state.

She further stated that the ministry of education in Katsina is also planning to ensure that rural areas are included in its noble initiatives.

The Kaduna state Commissioner of education said that the ministry is also planning to address welfare challenges for teachers as well as addressing the issue of security in risk-prone areas.
