Lagos’ DNA forensic lab to be ready in 2017

DNALagos State Government yesterday said work has started on a new deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) forensic laboratory to complement efforts in fighting crime and is to be ready in the next 12 months.

State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Adeniji Kazeem, told reporters yesterday that the establishment of the multi-million dollars laboratory: Lagos State DNA Forensic Centre (LSDFC), was a testimony of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s commitment to fighting crime.

It would, however, be recalled that the State government in the wake of DANA plane crash of June 2012, commenced work on a state-own DNA laboratory at the Forensic Department of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja.

The Guardian yesterday gathered that the LASUTH-DNA project was abandoned mid way.

The Commissioner said the facility, which would be driven by the Ministry of Justice with active support of the Governor, would focus on DNA analysis to support the justice sector in diverse areas.
