The Winner of Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) Season 5, and Sickle Cell Foundation Nigeria Ambassador, Olamilekan Agbeleshe, popularly known as Laycon, a sickle cell carrier, has called on Nigerians to always go for genotype screening to know their haemoglobin phenotype and compatibility before getting married to reduce the number of Nigerians living with Sickle Cell Disorder (SCD).

He said this at the Sickle Cell Walk in Surulere, Lagos, yesterday, organised by Sickle Cell Foundation Nigeria in collaboration with Coalition of Non-governmental Organisations (NGOs), as part of activities to mark World Sickle Cell Day.

He said that newborn babies should be screened to know their genotype.

Consultant Public Health Physician and the National Director/Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sickle Cell Foundation Nigeria, Idi-Araba, Lagos, Dr. Annette Akinsete, said that it is dangerous for one not to know his or her genotype status.

“We always tell people to stop discriminating and stigmatising against people living with sickle cell disorder because it is not contagious and infectious.”
