JUST when many thought it was time for the music exponent to go on retirement, after years of active service in the country’s music industry, legendary musician and guitar maestro Sir Victor Uwaifo is back with double album tagged Legend Reborn, featuring some of the leading stars in the present day hip-hop genre.

Ahead of the formal release of the new works, 960 Music Group and Hypertek Digital recently out together an album listening session for Uwaifo at The Rumors, Ikeja Lagos. The evening of great music with contemporary fusion of hip-hop brought back memories of the good old days of the Nigerian music industry. As for the guests, it was an opportunity to be among the first set of Nigerians to listen to the legend’s latest work.

Hosted by Cordelia Okpei, the General Manager of Metro 97.7 FM, the evening had in attendance Patrick Doyle and wife, actress Ireti Doyle, 2face Idibia, Efe Omorogbe, Dotun Omotoye, Chinedu Chukwuji, GM of Premier Music and other dignitaries. Uwaifo’s young musician/music producer son, Andre Vybez who is one of the producers of the album was also present. Leriq, J sleek, Del B and J Martins also produced songs on this double album, which features from 2Face, Ice Prince, Waje, Ozone and Queen Moda.

A documentary of Uwaifo’s legendary sojourn in the music industry with a commentary infused with anecdotes was screened at the event. Snippets of his popular songs like Joromi, Guitar Boy as well as Tupepe and No Leave Me Alone, which features 2face and Waje respectively, were played, while the music maestro humorously answered questions from guests.

The Legend Reborn promises to bring nostalgic memories of the 60s and 70s, create new memories for the younger generation and incite a deeper appreciation for the highlife genre of music. In the words of the artiste, “to marry digital technology and analog has given birth to what we call a mongrel of sound.”

Sir Victor Uwaifo is a musician, writer, sculptor, and musical instrument inventor. He also served as commissioner for arts and culture in Edo State under the government of Lucky Igbinedion. Uwaifo is famous for his Joromi music and records under the name Sir Victor Uwaifo.

His popular hits include Guitar Boy and Joromi, which were huge greatly appreciated in the 60s.

Guitar Boy, according to Uwaifo, was inspired by an encounter (which he has long maintained actually occurred) with “mami water” (mermaid), while lounging on Bar Beach, Lagos.
