MAN urges new INEC chair to uphold credibility

The Muslim Association of Nigeria (MAN) has urged the newly confirmed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Josiah Ojo Amupitan, to view his appointment as a national call to duty and to ensure fairness, transparency, and integrity in the conduct of elections nationwide.

The association gave the advice in a communiqué issued at the end of its National Officers’ Meeting held at its headquarters in Surulere, Lagos.

In the statement jointly signed by Professor Dhikrullah Yagboyaju, President, and Hon. Mudirakat Ajibola, National Publicity Secretary, MAN charged the new INEC boss to build on the achievements of his predecessor and strengthen the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process.

“The performance of democracy in Nigeria depends significantly on the credibility of elections, which is a core responsibility of INEC. Professor Amupitan must see this new assignment as a call to duty, one that demands even-handedness and integrity,” the statement read.

The group also cautioned the public against spreading or believing unverified news, noting the dangers of misinformation to national peace and cohesion.

Referring to recent unconfirmed reports about alleged mass killings of religious adherents and rumours of a possible coup plot, MAN urged Nigerians to exercise restraint and verify information before sharing it.”We caution against the circulation of fake or unconfirmed stories, especially those capable of inciting fear or division among citizens. The unity and stability of Nigeria must not be compromised,” the group stated.

MAN reaffirmed its commitment to promoting peace, good governance, and moral values in the country, praying for Nigeria’s continued progress and for wisdom for its leaders.
