The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) has rejected the moves by some select chiefs to foist an oil company on Ogoni.
The movement stressed that the alleged move contradicts the wish of the people to be part of the efforts for oil exploration resumption.
MOSOP president Fegalo Nsuke in a statement in Abuja, said that the chiefs are pulling the strings for the oil firm, Geoplex Drillteq Limited which lacks people’s support.
Nsuke alleged that the groups plan to meet with “the representatives of the company on May 25, 2024, at the Birabi Memorial Grammar School, Bori, Ogoni to endorse the company (Geoplex) to resume oil production in Ogoni.
He warned that no one should force anythings against the will of the people who are not in support of the plan.
Nsuke noted that in a democracy, dialogue remains the best way to arrive at credible solutions to issues, “and we want the President to initiate a genuine dialogue for a peaceful settlement.
“The people of Ogoni will continue to remain peaceful and law-abiding despite the efforts of a few persons to drag them backwards despite the people’s resolve to forge ahead and benefit from their God-given oil.”
“We consider it absurd and unacceptable that while an option for a peaceful negotiation and a mutually beneficial settlement is already available, Geoplex Drillteq in connivance with traditional rulers will undertake a path that may generate tension and pose a threat to the peace of our society,” Nsuke said.
