The road was closed to the public by the Nigerian Railway Corporation and the state government after a train derailed in the area on January 10.
The Railway District Manager, Lagos, Mr. Jerry Oche, had in the aftermath of the derailment, said the corporation was working with the state government to raise the road level to meet the rail track.
According to him, the step became imperative to guard against future derailment and accidents.
“A level crossing is made up of two components — the track and the road. We have done the track. The road component of the level crossing is not for us, it is for Lagos State.”
While the closure lasted, motorists and residents lamented the hardship they faced as a result of the closure of the level crossing. A commercial bus driver, Femi Ajayi, described it as “hardship of the highest order,” adding that he spends more hours in traffic than before.
Now, both the rail track and the road linking Agege-Oshodi expressway with Guinness, close to Mangoro bus stop, which was terribly bad, have been rehabilitated and road users will now spend less time plying the axis.
But moving from the spot towards Isokoko Police Station near Zenith Bank is another bad spot that is expanding by the day and almost dividing the road into two.
Driving to Ikeja from the same spot, close to the traffic light junction that links motorists coming from Sango-Iyana-Ipaja with Oshodi, is another bad spot that forces drivers, going to or from Agege, to a halt.
A civil servant who plies the road, Taiye Adelekan, lamented the deplorable condition of the road and what motorists face usually at night.
“The axis is becoming notorious for traffic jam. Beside the heavy-duty vehicles that move mostly at night, the situation is always compounded by the bad spots.
“As a result, commuters sometime arrive home after 12midnight. We are calling on the government to ensure that those concerned do proper rehabilitation of the road linking Guinness with Agege-Oshodi road, while the abandoned flyover project at Agege Pen Cinema is revisited and work completed on schedule to ease our pains.”
