The National Directorate of Employment (NDE), said on Friday that it would organise a five months free intensive skills acquisition training for 360 unemployed persons in Nasarawa State.

The NDE Coordinator in the state, Alhaji Dauda Idris-Wase told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Keffi that the training would commence on Aug. 8.

He said that the aim was to make the beneficiaries self-reliant, to empower them contribute positively to national development.

The different skills acquisition training includes, tailoring and fashion design, hairdressing, plumbing, interior decoration, computer maintenance and operation, welding and catering.

NDE came into existence in 1986, saddled with the responsibility of training people especially the youths and women in different skills, in order to be self-reliant and to contribute their quota to national development.

There is high rate of unemployment that has degenerated to anti-social activities such as violent crimes, insecurity, armed robbery, drug and human trafficking among others.

It is better for government to teach people how to fish than to give them fish to eat.

I urge Nigerians not to continue to wait for white collar jobs but to embrace skills acquisition for the overall development of the country,” he said.

The coordinator said that the training would take place at the agency’s skills acquisition centres in the three senatorial districts of the state.

Idris-Wase called for collective efforts and partnership to provide more job opportunities to all categories of unemployed persons, so as to reduce poverty and generate wealth in the country.

He restated the directorate’s commitment to initiate more programmes to tackle youth unemployment, restiveness and poverty in the state and country at large.
