In line with the Ministry of Art, Culture, and the Creative Economy’s objective to generate three million jobs, the National Institute for Culture Orientation (NICO) has revealed plans to facilitate the creation of 200,000 jobs through its upcoming Nationwide Craft Fiesta.
The Nationwide Craft Fiesta aims to empower 20 artisans, craftsmen, and craftswomen from the 774 local government areas (LGAs) in the country to showcase and market their products globally.
The Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Otunba Biodun Ajiboye, announced this at a press briefing held in the Institute’s boardroom in Wuse, Abuja.
Otunba Ajiboye explained that the event is primarily designed to celebrate, exhibit, and promote the creativity of Nigerian youths while fostering patriotism.
He further noted that six editions of the fiesta will be organised across the country’s geopolitical zones, with each edition lasting for one week.
He said, “The Nationwide Craft Fiesta, aimed at laying the foundation of the creative economy, is designed to directly engage, encourage, and promote craftsmanship in Nigeria.
“We plan to raise 20 artisans, craftsmen, and women across various specialties from each of the 774 local government area councils. The six editions will be organised across the geopolitical zones and will last for one week. We intend to create 200 jobs across the country.”
The Project Manager of the Nationwide Fiesta, Mr. Kayode Adeoti, added that the selection process will utilise technology to ensure transparency and fairness.
He noted that participants will have the chance to win awards and grants from various local governments and stakeholders.
“We intend to leverage technology and social media in the selection of participants to ensure transparency. The fiesta will celebrate Nigeria’s talents, crafts, and artistry.
“There will be a boot camp where participants will receive training and mentorship on how to package their products. Those selected will also have opportunities to win awards or grants from local governments and stakeholders,” Adeoti stated.
