• Correctional Service recaptures two fleeing inmates in Katsina
Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has said the year 2023 witnessed an unprecedented feat of zero jailbreaks and attacks across all 253 custodial centres in the country.
Assistant Controller of Corrections (ACC) and NCoS spokesperson, Abubakar Umar, disclosed this to journalists in Abuja, yesterday.
Umar attributed the success to measures implemented by the government in fortifying security against internal and external threats.
Reflecting on the nation’s history of jailbreaks and attacks, he highlighted extensive deployment of personnel and advanced technology for intelligence gathering.
Umar said the service invested in infrastructural development and security strategies throughout the year, and learnt from challenges faced in 2022.
He added that the feat is a testament to robust security measures and dedicated efforts by critical stakeholders.
Meanwhile, the Katsina Command of NCoS has secured the return of two inmates who escaped the Medium Security Custodial Centre in October.
One of the fugitives, Ibrahim Muhammad-Lawal (alias Abba Kala), was arrested shortly after their escape while the other, Musa Isah, was arrested on Tuesday in Kaduna.
This was confirmed by the spokesman of the command, ASC Najib Idris, in Katsina.
The inmates had been awaiting trial for alleged robbery when they escaped.
He said a search party was constituted, in collaboration with sister security agencies, which led to the arrest of Muhammad-Lawal.
He said: “In order to recapture the remaining one, the service deployed its e-tracking mechanism as well as overt and covert intelligence gathering. This resulted in the recapture of the second escapee, Musa Isah, on December 19, in Kaduna metropolis.”
