Nigeria is not winning the war against human trafficking, child labour, modern slavery and other forms of trafficking, as the cartels involved have adopted sophisticated methods of luring victims from their homes.
Founder/Executive Director, Live Abundantly, Dr. Ama Onyerinma, disclosed this, yesterday, in Lagos, during an event organised by the National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Live Abundantly, International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and other bodies to mark the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons 2023.
Part of the activities lined up for the occasion was a road walk where traders, motorists and others were enlightened on the dangers of human trafficking.
Ama said the menace had dropped drastically since 2020 due to COVID-19 pandemic, which forced the cartels to go underground, noting that the practice is currently on the increase.
She urged the Federal Government and other stakeholders to intensify campaigns against the heinous act.
On his part, Head of Public Enlightenment, NAPTIP, Frederick Uche Okoh, said in the last one year, the agency had arrested, investigated and prosecuted a good number of offenders, while some are still under investigation.
