Edo coalition urges police to address violence from ethnic protesters

The Civil Society Coalition in Edo State has condemned acts of violence by youths claiming to represent the interests of the Benin ethnic group following a recent protest at the Benin-Owena River Basin Development Authority (BORDA).

The group has called on the state’s Commissioner of Police, Betty Otimenyin, to act swiftly and hold those responsible accountable to deter further ethnic chauvinism.

In a press briefing held in Benin, the Coordinator of the Civil Society Coalition, King David, urged the police commissioner to take immediate action to ensure adequate security at BORDA and prevent further disturbances. David expressed concerns over the ongoing protests, particularly those instigated by youths claiming to represent the Benin ethnic nation.

The protesters demanded that the position of managing director be given to a Benin indigene as a reward for hosting the agency. However, David criticised this demand, explaining that BORDA serves four states: Edo, Ondo, Ekiti, and Delta, and it is not solely representative of the Benin people.

He emphasised that the Dr Femi Adekanbi-led management should be allowed to resume without delay and implement its development plans. David urged protesters to stop their disruptive actions and allow peace to prevail for the benefit of Edo State and its neighbouring states.

David also pointed out that Edo State has occupied the position of managing director five times since BORDA’s establishment, more than any other state it represents. He noted that several of those who held the position were of Benin descent, including the immediate past managing director, who completed an eight-year tenure.

The group further cautioned against actions that could jeopardise the authority’s location in Edo State, harming the state’s industrial progress. The Coalition called for a peaceful resolution and respect for established protocols, including the Federal Character Commission.
