The Coordinator, Lagos Cityzens Hub, Waziri Mainasara, has stressed the need for sustainable environment by reducing carbon emission.
Speaking at the Sustainable Transport Festival 2025 and Car-free Day held at Oworonshoki in Lagos recently, he said:, “Instead of bringing your cars outside, bring your bicycles to ride. Cars contribute to carbon emission, which affects the environment. We sensitise children about air pollution, its causes and what they can do to protect themselves.”
Project Coordinator Sustainable Transport Festival, Mariam Adenuga noted, ‘We advocate a non-motorised transportation for us to have cleaner air. We also create gospel of sustainability. We encourage people to do more cycling. We want government to create bicycle lanes within major roads and provide car free streets. We have done this in five communities, that is Bariga, Agege, Ikeja, Oworonsoki and the last one will be at Lagos Island.’
The Sustainable Transport Festival organised by the Lagos Urban Development Initiative (LUDI) in partnership with the Heinrich Böll Stiftung (HBS) and UrbanBetter Cityzens, brought Lagos communities together to reimagine their streets, giving residents a glimpse of what the city could look like if people came before cars.
Transportation shapes everyday life in Lagos; it provides access to jobs, education, and services. Yet, the city’s heavy reliance on cars has led to congested traffic, hazardous roads, rising air pollution, and widening inequality..
The Sustainable Transport Festival provides a city where children can play safely, where air is cleaner, where walking and cycling are normal, and where transport connects rather than divide.
