The clash between two rival groups, also known as Sara Suka, has left at least five people dead during the Sallah Eid-el-Fitr celebration in Jos, Plateau State.
The incident occurred several hours after Muslims had completed their prayers on Sunday at the Al-Mohap prayer ground, located in the hinterlands of Jos North Council.
The two groups had been embroiled in a long-standing feud before the latest incident.
Aside from the clash, eyewitnesses said the Eid-el-Fitr celebration in Jos was largely peaceful.
Church services for Christians proceeded without disturbance, as both communities observed their religious practices in harmony. Muslims heading to the Ali Kazaure prayer ground passed by Christians on their way to church, exchanging pleasantries in a show of mutual respect and goodwill.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State marked the celebration with a special broadcast, urging the Muslims to live peacefully with both the Christian and Muslim adherents.
He commended the resilience, devotion, and discipline exhibited by the Muslim community during the Ramadan period.
Mutfwang described Ramadan as the Unity Month and a time of deep reflection, spiritual renewal, and moral fortification underscoring its significance in strengthening faith and fostering compassion.
“This season of sacrifice and self-denial has impacted invaluable lessons, shaping our character and reinforcing our faith. I encourage you to sustain the spirit of prayer and intercession for continued peace and prosperity in our dear state and country,” the governor added.
