Kano gov agrees to pay N71,000 minimum wage

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has approved the sum of N71,000 as the statutory wage for state civil servants.
In a statement posted on Facebook, Governor Yusuf said the new minimum wage takes effect at the end of November 2024.
According to him, the new wage will increase the state’s monthly wage bill by N6 billion at the state level and N7 billion for local government workers.
“In line with our commitment to social justice and enhancement of the standard of living for our workers, we have approved the sum of 71,000 naira as the new minimum wage in Kano State,” he added.
“Additionally, following the promotion of 20,737 teachers by our government, a total increment amounting to over N340 million has now been reflected in their respective salaries.”
Recall that the Governor pledged to release the state minimum wage when he received the report of the special committee on the recommendation of the new wage led by Bala Usman, Special Adviser to the Governor on State Affairs.
Although Usman disclosed that Governor Yusuf reserved the prerogative to announce the final amount, he reminded that the payment of wages largely depends on the ability to pay.
The former head of service stressed that Kano has the largest number of civil servants in Nigeria despite its dwindling internally generated revenue.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Kano State chapter had not reacted to the new wage announced by the state government at the time of filing this report.
