Holistic education non-negotiable for development, says VC

The Vice Chancellor of Dominion University, Ibadan, Professor Abel Olajide Olorunnisola, has reaffirmed the institution’s unwavering commitment to holistic education, one that nurtures both intellect and spirit, describing it as “non-negotiable” in today’s world.

Speaking during a press conference held on campus ahead of the university’s third Convocation Ceremony, scheduled for Saturday, October 25, the Vice-Chancellor described the event as a significant milestone in the life of the faith-based institution.

“Convocation is more than a ceremony; it is the culmination of years of intellectual pursuit and character formation. These graduates have not only excelled academically, but have also been shaped spiritually,” he said.

Founded in 2019, Dominion University was conceived as a tripartite mission institution, focused on soul-winning, media-driven evangelism, and the cultivation of godly, intellectually sound young leaders. These founding values, according to Prof. Olorunnisola, continue to shape the university’s curriculum and culture.

This year, 130 students will graduate from two of the university’s faculties—Arts, Social and Management Sciences, and Computing and Applied Sciences. A total of 24 students earned First-Class Honours, with 75 percent of them being female.

“This trend is not only encouraging but also telling of the discipline, focus, and academic excellence our female students bring to bear,” the VC noted.

Out of the 24 First-Class honours, 18 were awarded to female graduates, a development Professor Olorunnisola said signals the university’s inclusive learning environment and strong gender representation in academic achievement.

‘’These are not just graduates. These are thinkers, innovators, and leaders in the making,” he added.

Among the university’s recent academic milestones is the successful launch of the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, which currently offers degree programmes in Nursing Science, Public Health, and Medical Laboratory Science. These programmes, introduced in 2024, are already in their second year and have attracted commendable enrolment.

“We have made strategic investments in academic quality, infrastructure, and faculty development, all of which contribute to our rising profile in Nigeria’s tertiary education space.

“We train not just the brain, but also the spirit. Whether a student is studying engineering, medical sciences, or the humanities, we instill godliness alongside professional competence,” Prof. Olorunnisola said.

He described the university’s alumni as “marketplace missionaries”, graduates who carry their faith and ethical grounding into their various professional fields.

“We are not just producing employable graduates; we are shaping men and women who will uphold righteousness and integrity in the marketplace,” he stated.

The Vice Chancellor expressed gratitude to all who have supported the journey, from the Chancellor and Board of Trustees to the Governing Council, Senate, staff, alumni, parents, and well-wishers.

“This journey has been made possible by divine grace and the unwavering commitment of our community. Dominion University has come not just to stay, but to lead,” he said.
