The legislative chamber was filled with sombre reflections today as lawmakers paid tribute to their late colleague, Victor Akande, who passed away recently.
The session began with a poignant moment led by Tijani Surajudeen, who informed the house that the late legislator’s wake-keeping was scheduled for today and his burial for tomorrow.
He requested a minute of standing silence in honour of the late Akande. He proposed that a representative be sent from the house to attend the burial, a motion that was unanimously supported.
Lawmakers took turns sharing heartfelt stories and memories of Akande, highlighting his significant contributions during his eight years in the House.
Stephen Ogundipe recalled a promise made by the speaker: that the house would take responsibility whenever a member faced adversity. He described Akande as an outspoken and intelligent individual, noting that the late lawmaker often expressed gratitude to the speaker and urged his
Olalere Ololade offered prayers for the deceased, asking God to grant him eternal rest, and thanked the speaker for his assistance to Akande’s family.
Similarly, Gbolahan Yishau spoke of his diligence, describing him as a very hardworking and jovial person.
Abiodun Tobun highlighted Akande’s friendly nature and strong relationships with all his colleagues, adding his thanks to the speaker for his support during Akande’s illness.
He also urged the house to consider the welfare of the family Akande left behind.
In his own heartfelt tribute, Speaker, Dr. Mudashiru Obasa said it was painful to see a colleague die, but reminded everyone that death is an inevitable part of life.
He praised Akande as a trustworthy, hardworking member who always stood with the house.
“We are all going to die; let us take care of our health. Health is wealth; don’t joke with your health,” he urged.
The speaker instructed the clerk to write a formal letter of condolence to the family and ensured that lawmakers would be present at the upcoming final burial for Akande.
