Sanwo-Olu receives award for social protection implementation
Lagos State Government, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing social protection programmes through the National Social Register (NSR).
This assurance was given by the Deputy Chief of Staff, Sam Egube, who represented Sanwo-Olu at a one-day stakeholders’ engagement themed: “Advancing Social Protection through the National Social Register,” in Lagos.
Meanwhile, the state government has been recognised for its commitment to social protection programmes, dedication to improving the lives of citizens, particularly the most vulnerable, as well as its tireless efforts in strengthening the NSR and ensuring all residents benefit from the programmes.
Egube, who received the Champion of Care Award for Social Protection Implementation in Nigeria on behalf of the governor, commended President Bola Tinubu for repositioning the NSR as a credible platform for delivering interventions.
It would be recalled that under Sanwo-Olu’s leadership, the state government has made significant strides in social protection, including the delivery of N130 billion in social protection support to over 18.5 million Lagos residents through coordinated interventions.
The NSR, which has become one of the world’s largest social protection databases, has been instrumental in the state’s social protection efforts. With over 19 million heads of households and individual members captured, the NSR has been transformed into a more reliable and inclusive system through the recent integration of the National Identification Number (NIN).
The state government implemented initiatives like the OUNJE EKO food subsidy programme, which has enhanced access to affordable, nutritious food for low-income households.
It had also decentralised governance through local committees, creating a unified, grassroots approach to addressing critical issues like food insecurity and malnutrition.
