The Imo State Police Command has detained two suspects, Obinna Obiekea, widely known as “Losky,” and his son, Chidubem, for their alleged involvement in the burning of their kinsman, Chima Okafor, in Oguta Local Government Area (LGA).

The incident occurred in the early hours of New Year’s Day in Nnebugwu, where the victim, 35-year-old Chima, was accused of stealing a pair of jeans worth ₦25,000.

According to witnesses, Chima was attending a crossover service at a local Cherubim church when the accused, alongside other family members, dragged him out, assaulted him, and set him ablaze.

Uche Okafor, the victim’s father, narrated the ordeal, revealing that Chima was attacked by Obinna, his wife Nwamaka, and their two sons, Eloka and Chidubem.

“My son was beaten with weapons and then set on fire in their compound. Though he was rushed to a nearby hospital, he couldn’t survive the severe burns,” he lamented.

Mr. Okafor called on Governor Hope Uzodimma and President Bola Tinubu to intervene and ensure justice is served.
“While Obinna and Chidubem are in police custody, Nwamaka and Eloka remain at large. I urge the authorities to apprehend them as well,” he said in his petition to the police.

The Imo State Police confirmed that the case has been transferred to the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Owerri.

A senior police source stated, “An autopsy will be conducted, and the investigation will involve witnesses to ensure the case file is properly prepared for court.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, assured the public of a thorough investigation.

“The Commissioner of Police has ordered that all involved be brought to justice. The police will leave no stone unturned,” he said.
Some residents described the incident as a tragic escalation of a mere accusation. “Even if he were guilty, there are lawful ways to address such matters,” a community leader remarked.
