Ogun, Oyo declare August 20 public holiday for Isese Day

Two Southwest states—Ogun and Oyo—have formally declared Wednesday, August 20, 2025, as a public holiday to mark the annual Isese Day celebration.

In Ogun State, the holiday is being observed for the third consecutive year after it was formally recognised in 2023 by the House of Assembly and approved by Governor Dapo Abiodun. The day is dedicated to celebrating Yoruba religion and traditions.

A statement issued by the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Hon. Kayode Akinmade, noted that the decision reflects the state government’s recognition of the cultural and spiritual values of the Yoruba heritage.

“Isese Day serves as an opportunity for adherents of the Yoruba religion to honour their ancestors, engage in traditional practices, and promote the values and teachings inherent in their spiritual beliefs,” the statement read.

The government added that the celebration fosters a sense of community among practitioners and also provides an avenue for the wider society to appreciate the Yoruba cultural tradition.

In Oyo State, the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Olanike Adeyemo, confirmed the holiday in a circular dated August 18, 2025. According to the circular, Governor Seyi Makinde approved the work-free day in line with the state’s recognition of the annual festival.

The statement urged residents to use the day for prayers towards peace, unity, and stability in the state and across Nigeria.

Isese Day has in recent years gained formal recognition in several Yoruba-speaking states, with the August 20 date now observed as a day set aside for traditional religion adherents and cultural practitioners to mark their annual festival.
