The Kebbi State Police Command has said that the attack on the convoy of former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, in Birnin-Kebbi on Monday is connected to breaches of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) campaign regulations by political supporters.
The Commissioner of Police, Bello Sani, disclosed this after an emergency security meeting with heads of security agencies in the state.
He confirmed that although no suspect has been arrested, investigations are ongoing to establish the extent of involvement of political groups.
“We have commenced investigation into the attack, and no arrest has been made yet. The governor convened this meeting to review security developments,” Mr Sani said.
According to him, the violence occurred around the GRA area of Birnin-Kebbi and involved members of political parties.
He said security agencies had resolved to summon party leaders and caution them against further violations of electoral guidelines.
Mr Sani added that the measures were intended to prevent an escalation of violence as political activities intensify in the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The police commissioner urged political actors to exercise restraint, noting that maintaining peace and stability remained the responsibility of leaders across party lines.
Mr Malami, who served as AGF between 2015 and 2023 under the administration of the late President Muhammadu Buhari, resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) on 2 July and later joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
He was reportedly attacked while returning from a condolence visit in the state capital.
