Sokoto govt trains boat operators to prevent mishaps

The Sokoto State Government has begun training boat operators across the state as part of renewed efforts to reduce flood-related accidents and enhance water transportation safety.

The programme is led by the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), following the government’s recent acquisition of 20-seater motorised fibre boats and 1,000 life jackets.

The equipment, inspected last week by Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto—who was represented by his deputy, Alhaji Muhammad Idris Gobir—was unveiled during a ceremony in Sokoto.

Speaking at the training, the Director of Relief and Rehabilitation at SEMA, Mustapha Umar, who represented the Special Adviser on SEMA, Hon. Aminu Liman Bodinga, stated that the official flag-off and distribution of the boats and jackets would occur after the operators’ training is completed.

He explained that the programme is designed to equip operators with technical knowledge, practical skills, and safety procedures, including the effective use of life-saving equipment.

According to SEMA, local government officials will oversee the deployment of the boats and jackets across 10 flood-prone local government areas of the state.

Hon. Bodinga commended the initiative, emphasising that it would go a long way in safeguarding lives and property. He recalled recent tragedies in which several residents lost their lives to boat mishaps, describing the government’s intervention as timely and necessary.

“This effort underscores the state government’s commitment to prioritising the safety and welfare of its people. It is a major step towards strengthening emergency response and reducing risks during flood situations,” he said.
