Tragedy as hunter kills self in Ogun community

• Police warn hunters against handling firearms carelessly
Tragedy struck at Ajinawo area, Yewa North Local Council of Ogun State, when a hunter shot himself during a group hunting expedition.

The Guardian gathered that the incident occurred at about 4:30p.m., on March 23.

According to the police, a report was received that a hunting trip had turned fatal when a hunter, Taiwo Bolugbe, was accidentally shot by his own gun.

Spokesperson for Ogun State Police Command, CSP Omolola Odutola, said the police have launched an investigation into the tragic shooting, and arrested five hunters in connection with the incident.

She stated that the group embarked on a hunting expedition in the area near Dangote Cement Company, Ibese.

According to her, the accident occurred at about 3:00p.m., when the victim, Taiwo Bolugbe, attempted to retrieve a hunted animal.

“His Dane gun reportedly slipped from his shoulder, discharged accidentally, and fatally struck him in the neck and lower jaw.

“He succumbed to his injuries despite efforts by fellow hunters to save his life.

“The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.

“The designated Investigation Police Officer (IPO) and team will conduct further investigation and all statements will be reviewed. If found culpable, the fellow will be charged to court for prosecution.

“The Police Command urges the public to exercise caution while handling firearms, even in hunting activities, to prevent tragic incidents,” Odutola said.
