Vigilante group arrests 180 suspects in Ogun within four months

The Commander of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) in Ogun State, Aare Shola Shodiyan, said yesterday that the command arrested more than 180 suspects for various offences across local councils and villages between June and October 2025.

Speaking at the command’s office in Abeokuta, Shodiyan said the arrests were made for theft, ritual activities, armed robbery and cybercrime. He added that most of the offenders were goat thieves, ritualists and vehicle snatchers who were promptly handed over to the police for further investigation.

“About 180 cases as at June to October. They are mostly theft, rituals, armed robbery, ‘Yahoo’ plus. They steal goats and vehicles at the village. So when we arrest them like that, we hand them over to the police because one of the purposes of establishing VGN was to complement the work of the police,” he said.

Shodiyan commended Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun for supporting the group with vehicles, communication gadgets, motorcycles and other tools for effective grassroots security operations.

“Governor Abiodun has been providing these resources. If you get to his house at Iperu, you will see our vehicle and our men working hand in hand with other security agencies. He has been supportive.

He has been assisting in training our men and assisting us with funds,” he said.
