World Environment Day: Olawepo-Hashim warns of plastic pollution threat

Frontline politician and former presidential candidate, Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has raised fresh concerns over the growing threat of plastic pollution, describing it as a “silent but dangerous invader” of homes, oceans, and even the global food chain.

In a goodwill message to mark this year’s World Environment Day, personally signed by him, Olawepo-Hashim aligned with the theme of the event, “Plastic Pollution and What We Can Do to Tackle It,” noting that it serves as a call to action for individuals, communities, and governments alike.

“We are reminded of our shared responsibility to protect the planet that sustains us all,” he stated.

He noted that plastic waste posed a grave threat to public health, wildlife, and the delicate balance of ecosystems., warning that Nigeria is not insulated from the dangers.

“From clogged drainage systems in our cities to polluted waterways in our rural communities, the evidence of plastic pollution is everywhere,” he said.

Despite the dire situation, the statesman expressed optimism, asserting that the problem can still be reversed through collective action.

“There is hope—and there is something each of us can do. We must rethink our relationship with plastic. This begins with reducing our reliance on single-use plastics, encouraging innovation in sustainable packaging, and promoting large-scale recycling programs,” he said.

He urged governments to strengthen regulation and enforcement, while calling on industries to invest in greener alternatives. He also appealed to citizens, especially the youth, to lead a cultural shift toward environmental consciousness.

“Environmental protection is not merely a policy issue; it is a moral obligation. We owe it to future generations to act boldly today so they may inherit a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable world,” he stressed.

Olawepo-Hashim concluded with a global appeal: “On this World Environment Day, I urge every Nigerian and every global citizen to reflect, engage, and act. Together, we can turn the tide on plastic pollution. Together, we can build a future where nature thrives, and humanity lives in harmony with its environment.”
