Yobe launches cybercrime, bullying awareness campaign in schools

The Yobe State government, in partnership with the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MBSE), has launched an awareness programme on cybercrime and bullying in selected secondary schools across the state.

The initiative aims to tackle the growing threats of cyber-related offences such as fake news, hate speech, and irresponsible use of social media platforms among young people.

The State’s Focal Person on Cyber and Information Technology (CIT), Abdulmumnin Gulani, introduced the sensitisation programme during a recent visit to the MBSE Commissioner, Prof Abba Idris Adam, in Damaturu.

Gulani explained that the campaign is designed to reach students in secondary schools in each of the state’s 17 local government areas. He emphasised the importance of creating a safer online environment for students, particularly in the post-conflict period following the Boko Haram insurgency. He highlighted the urgent need to address issues such as cyber hate, fake news, and other online threats affecting youths in the region.

The proposed symposia aim to educate students on online safety, digital citizenship, and the responsible use of social media. Gulani stressed the significance of raising awareness and fostering collaboration to tackle cybersecurity and bullying in schools across the state.
