Nigeria has secured re-election into Part II of the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) at the ongoing 42nd ICAO Assembly in Montreal, Canada, marking a major diplomatic win for the country.
Nigeria’s candidate, Engr. Mahmoud Ben-Tukur, who currently serves as the country’s Representative to ICAO, polled 163 votes out of 185 eligible member states, defeating 11 other African contenders.
His re-election ensures Nigeria retains its seat on the Council, strengthening its role in shaping global aviation governance.
With this result, Nigeria joins 11 other countries re-elected into Part II of the Council, including Egypt and South Africa.
In a statement signed by the Special Assistant on Media to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Tunde Moshood, the outcome was described as a reflection of Nigeria’s resilient aviation diplomacy and strong alliances within the ICAO family.
Minister Festus Keyamo, who led Nigeria’s delegation to the Assembly and personally participated in the voting sessions for both Part I and Part II elections, hailed the victory as a “proud moment for Nigeria and Africa.”
He said the re-election reaffirms Nigeria’s commitment to advancing international civil aviation through safety, security, and sustainability initiatives.
