The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Edo State Branch on Friday tasked the Edo State Government with dedication to revamping primary healthcare facilities and expanding the health insurance scheme to improve access to healthcare and advocated for policies that prioritises healthcare for all.
This is contained in a statement signed by the Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Edo State Branch, Dr. Eustace Oseghale, as part of activities to mark the 2024 Universal Health Coverage (UHC) Day.
Oseghale said Okpebholo has shown commitment to improving the health sector in the state and solicited more investment in the health system to bridge the gap regardless of the socio-economic status of individuals to access the health services they need without facing financial hardship.
He noted that World Universal Health Coverage Day is a day of paramount importance to the global health community, and ensures that all individuals, regardless of their socio-economic status, can access the health services they need without facing financial hardship.
According to him, this principle is essential for fostering health equity and ensuring the well-being of our communities.
The NMA commended the World Health Organization (WHO) and other development partners for their collaborative and supportive roles in Edo State, saying its unwavering support and partnership have been instrumental in the progress towards achieving universal health coverage.
While declaring that there is still work to be done in promoting quality healthcare in Edo State, the NMA Chairman said, “To further enhance our healthcare delivery, we encourage the Edo State government to engage more health personnel to eliminate the burnout amongst doctors and healthcare workers.
“Additionally, better remuneration for healthcare workers is essential to stem the increasing brain drain of skilled manpower. Ensuring a well-supported and adequately compensated healthcare workforce is critical for sustaining the quality of care and achieving our health goals,” Oseghale said.
“Let us reaffirm our commitment to achieving UHC. Let us continue to advocate for policies that prioritize healthcare for all, to innovate in our practices, and to collaborate with our communities and government to remove barriers to health services.”
