The Osun State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has accused top Federal Government officials of diverting statutory allocations meant for the state’s 30 local government councils to accounts allegedly controlled by sacked All Progressives Congress (APC) chairmen and councillors.
Addressing journalists in Osogbo on Sunday, NULGE described the alleged action by the Minister of Finance, the Accountant General of the Federation, and the Attorney General of the Federation as an “unprecedented abuse of power” and a “bizarre violation of due process.”
According to the union, since March 2025, federal authorities have been channeling allocations into accounts purportedly opened with the United Bank for Africa by APC officials who were removed from office by court rulings.
“This development is scary and alarming,” NULGE said. “Paying public funds into privately controlled accounts is unbelievable and unprecedented in Nigeria’s public administration.”
The union recalled that the Federal High Court, in a ruling on May 15, 2025, ordered all parties to maintain the status quo pending the determination of the substantive suit, an order acknowledged by the Central Bank of Nigeria.
The case is scheduled for further hearing on Monday, September 29, 2025.
“We are not politicians. We are career officers, and our duty is to protect council assets. We cannot be expected to work with politicians sacked by competent courts but being imposed on us by the Attorney General,” NULGE stated.
“A country that does not respect the judiciary is digging its own grave.”
NULGE maintained that both the Federal High Court and Court of Appeal had removed the APC officials from office, leading to fresh local government elections and the swearing-in of new chairmen and councillors.
It accused the Attorney General of overstepping his authority by allegedly attempting to reinstate the ousted officials through control of council funds.
The union further alleged that the move could destabilize Osun State and pave the way for a declaration of emergency rule.
It called on the judiciary to safeguard the sanctity of its judgments and assured members that it would continue to pursue legal and peaceful options to resolve the crisis.
NULGE also appealed to Osun residents to remain calm and support Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration in maintaining peace and order.
