A national Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member serving in Lagos, Ogunyemi Nimota, has embarked on a climate change campaign targeted at creating awareness on environmental sustainability among secondary school students.

As part of the awareness campaign, five schools in Lagos Island Local Council, namely Eko Akete Grammar School, Elegbata Senior High School, Isale Eko Grammar School, Okesuna High School and Boys’ Senior Academy, made presentations on the theme of the campaign entitled, “Sustainable Living: Adopting a lifestyle that is friendly to the environment.”

Okesuna High School was awarded N50,000 for best presentation, Elegbata Senior High School received N30,000 for second position, while Isale Eko Grammar School took third with award of N20,000 cash .

Nimota said her motive was motivated by her posting to the Environmental Social and Governance Department, adding that her discovery revealed that young people were not aware of climate change.

She noted that the awareness involved teaching the students how to adopt a lifestyle that is friendly to the environment by reusing and recycling wastes.
She said: “I was posted to Social Welfare unit in my CDS group where the curiosity came to teach young people about prioritising sustainable living because most of these children do not know about climate change.”

She urged federal government to review the secondary school curriculum by including topics and issues around climate change, emphasising that everyone must be carried along in ensuring a sustainable society.

The Local Government Inspector for Lagos Island (LGA), Mrs Mofoluwake Adekunle, urged the students to practice the knowledge they have gained on climate change by practicing recycling and reusing items as a way of tackling environmental risks.

She commended the organiser’s effort, noting that the demonstration and cash rewards would motivate the students to take an active role in building a more sustainable future.

In his remarks, Head, Environmental Social and Governance at Marble Capital Limited, Ibrahim Jimoh, urged the students to shun the habit indiscriminate dumping of waste and rather conserve to help the government achieve its sustainable goals in climate change.
