Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate and former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, has advocated the establishment of more online universities in Nigeria.

He described online education as a critical sector and an essential step towards achieving a better nation, urging government to foster the growth of online universities in the country.

Obi, who made the call while delivering a keynote speech at the 2024 Nexford University graduation ceremony held over the weekend in Lagos, commended the online learning platform for massively educating the people for national development.

“It’s been proven that the more educated any country or society is, the more developed it is. So, whatever you can do to accelerate that is critical,” he stated.

Speaking on the theme: Lead the Change: Igniting Your Future, the former presidential candidate urged the graduating students to uphold strong character and a sound sense of values to discern right from wrong.

“Being a leader is difficult, but comes with its own components. You must have the right character, be competent and show compassion,” Obi said.

He stressed the importance of compassionate leadership, saying: “You have to care about others. Leadership is about caring. What is happening in our society today is because we lack leaders, who genuinely care about the society.”

Obi also challenged the graduates to contribute to the country’s transformation.

“I advise you all to be part of the thinking and change that will transform this country into a better position. Always ask questions, learn, and listen. The society needs you. The knowledge you have acquired is for the society, not just for you.”

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Nexford University, Fadl Al Tarzi, disclosed that the online learning institution, headquartered in the United States, produced approximately 1,200 Nigerian graduates in 2024.
