The Ogun State government has disclosed strides the Dapo Abiodun’s administration has made in improving access to quality education in the state, revealing that the government built and rehabilitated over 1,474 classrooms across the state.
Speaking at a press conference, the Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, revealed that the state government also has no fewer than 332 additional classroom projects currently underway.
He added that the state has also supplied 8,800 two-seater desks and benches to primary schools, 3,900 to junior secondary schools, and 2,395 pieces of teachers’ furniture.
Addressing staffing challenges, the commissioner noted that 3,000 teachers have been recruited, and the abolition of school fees has contributed to a rise in enrolment and a decrease in the number of out-of-school children.
Arigbabu further noted ongoing efforts to improve technical education, with all eight government-owned technical colleges being rehabilitated into world-class vocational training centres.
“The government has also ensured the regular payment of monthly subventions to all state-owned tertiary institutions and approved N200 million as an annual intervention fund for infrastructural development in institutions not benefiting from TETFund support,” Arigbabu added.
The commissioner also announced the launch of smart classrooms in secondary schools across Ogun’s 20 local government areas, designed to enhance the teaching and learning environment.
The first phase of this project, which will equip 72 secondary schools, is already underway, alongside the construction of 12 mega classrooms to reduce overcrowding.
