Ondo Amotekun says 5,000 herder-farmer conflicts resolved in one year

Aiyedatiwa vows to tackle infrastructure deficit

Ondo State Network Security Agency, Amotekun Corps, says it has resolved more than 5,000 herder-farmer conflicts within one year. Adetunji Adeleye, the commander of the Ondo Amotekun Corps, said this yesterday in Akure.

Adeleye, the pioneer commander of the corps, said his first case involved the arrest of 320 cows for destroying farmlands in the state.

“We all know what it takes to arrest only one cow from a Fulani man, but I brought them to book, and I brought them to justice. Thereafter, I summoned the leadership of both Miyetti Allah and the farmers, allowing each group to know their limitations,” he said. He added that anybody found involved in stealing cows (cattle rustling), regardless of their ethnic group, is a criminal.

“In cases where cows were rustled, whether you are Yoruba, Igbo or Hausa, once you steal cows, I will go after you and bring you to book. We hand the cows back to the Fulani man for them to know that we are not against any particular ethnic group, but we are against criminals,” he added. Adeleye, however, said his appointment in 2020 came with no clear blueprint but to rid Ondo State of crime.

MEANWHILE, the Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, yesterday declared his administration’s commitment to tackling the state’s infrastructure deficit, with a special focus on transforming the capital, Akure, into a modern and world-class city comparable to the best in Nigeria.

Aiyedatiwa, who also assured civil servants of a new affordable housing scheme, disclosed that the ongoing urban renewal projects in the Alagbaka area of the city marked the beginning of a comprehensive development agenda, promising an accelerated pace of work on some road infrastructure, particularly the Ijoka Road and the Onyearugbulem / Shagari flyover projects.

Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of 32 units of four-bedroom terraced residential buildings for members of the State Executive Council at the Government House Grounds, the governor hinted at other planned road initiatives designed to reshape the city.

Aiyedatiwa emphasised that the milestone project, when completed, would address the housing needs of cabinet members while also strengthening infrastructure development in the state capital.
