Peter Obi pays tribute to late Christian Chukwu

Former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has joined Nigerians in mourning football legend Christian “Chairman” Chukwu, who was laid to rest in his hometown of Obe, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.

In a moving tribute, Obi described Chukwu as “one of Nigeria’s finest sports minds,” whose life exemplified discipline, resilience, humility, and leadership.

“For many years, as both player and coach at club, national, and international levels, Chukwu displayed uncommon sportsmanship and left a legacy that will inspire generations,” Obi said.

Fondly nicknamed “Chairman,” the former Super Eagles captain and coach was celebrated not only for his brilliance on the field but also for his humility and mentorship off it. Obi noted that the outpouring of love and honour for him, both in life and in death, reflected “the selfless and fulfilled life he lived.”

The Labour Party leader commended Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, for pledging support to former Rangers players, urging him to fulfil the promise.

He also called on other governors and the federal government to extend care to sportsmen and women who, he said, “sacrificed their youthful years to represent their states and country, contributing immensely to our national pride. They must not be forgotten in their time of need.”

Obi extended condolences to Chukwu’s family, colleagues, and the wider football community, praying for his soul’s eternal rest.

“I pray God grants his soul eternal repose and blesses Nigeria’s new generation of sportsmen and women with many more Christian Chukwus in the New Nigeria that is possible,” he said.
