The Police Command in Akwa Ibom, yesterday, confirmed the abduction of a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Eyo Edet.
The victim, popularly known as Eyo Aswang, was abducted on Monday by gunmen in Oron Local Council of the state.
Public Relations Officer, Odiko Macdon, said Commissioner of Police, Olatoye Durosinmi, has ordered investigation into the matter.
He said the commissioner visited the scene of the incident and the waterfront in Oron, where the abductors burnt a Sienna vehicle used for the operation.
“We’ve seen the Sienna used to perpetrate the act. Investigations have commenced already, and I’m sure the abductors will be brought to book, in no distant time,” Macdon said.
NAN gathered that Edet, who was Deputy Coordinator of Divine Mandate Organisation in Oron, during the last elections, was kidnapped at his filling station.
An eyewitness said the kidnappers took the victim away in a Sienna vehicle. Thereafter, they jumped into a speedboat and headed for the creeks.
The abductors are yet to contact Edet’s family.
Also, kidnappers abducted seven students of the University of Jos, Monday night, as the undergraduates prepared for their ongoing examinations.
The incident took place around 8:30 p.m. in an off-campus hostel, opposite former School of Accountancy, at Odus, Bauchi Ring Road.
A source said the seven had been reading for the tests, when the abductors arrived, fired shots into the air to scare onlookers, and whisked the students away.
On Tuesday, the abductors reportedly called a parent of one of the victims and demanded an undisclosed ransom. They promised to call back, yesterday, by 10:00 a.m. They had not done so as of the time of filing this report.
Senior Deputy Registrar of the university, Abdullahi Abdullahi, told The Guardian he could not “comment on what happened outside the institution’s campus, which is not within my jurisdiction.”
However, Public Relations Officers of the State Police Command, Alfred Alabo, said he was aware of the development.
“It was confirmed that such a thing happened. I have asked the Divisional Police Officer to send me a signal, so that we can start investigation immediately,” he said.
