Police deny arresting Biafra activists

THE Delta State Police Command has denied alleged obstruction by enforcement agents to last weekend’s peaceful march by members of the separatist Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) on the busy Benin-Asaba Expressway in the state capital.

Instead, the command said it only invited six of the leaders for questioning and were released after undertaking to eschew violence.

The acting police spokesman, Charles Muka, said the force decided not to forcefully break up the march because it was peaceful.

He advised parents to caution their children and wards against violence, saying: “Members of the public are advised to go about their legitimate businesses as adequate measures have been put in place to ensure their safety,” the police image-maker assured.

The protesters, brandishing Biafran flag and chanting solidarity songs, were registering their ill-feeling against detention of the Director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu and calling for the liberation of Biafra as a an independent country.
