The Nasarawa State Police Command has confirmed that its officers successfully repelled an attack by suspected gunmen on Tuesday night along the Kadarko–Makurdi Road in Keana Local Government Area.
According to a statement issued on Friday by the command’s spokesperson, Ramhan Nansel, the incident occurred at about 10:55 p.m. when gunmen reportedly emerged from a forest bordering Benue State and opened fire on officers stationed along the route.
Nansel said the officers responded immediately, engaging the attackers in a gunfight that forced the assailants to retreat into the forest.
“The gunmen who ambushed and attacked our personnel came from the Benue forest and started shooting sporadically,” the statement read. “The personnel, through tactical response and courage, engaged the assailants in a fierce gun duel, repelled the attack, and forced the criminals to flee with suspected gunshot wounds.”
During the exchange, one police officer, Inspector Sunday Apochie, sustained gunshot injuries. He was evacuated by officers from the Kadarko Division and is currently receiving medical treatment. Police said he is in stable condition and responding to care.
However, Nansel confirmed that a civilian was hit and killed by a stray bullet during the confrontation. The identity of the victim has not yet been made public.
Commissioner of Police in the state, Shetima Jauro-Mohammed, has directed a full investigation into the attack and assured that all efforts are being made to track down the suspects. He also extended his condolences to the family of the deceased civilian.
The police command called on residents to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement as security agencies work to secure the area.
