Rainstorm destroys 496 houses in four Ekiti LGAs

A severe rainstorm in Ekiti State has damaged several houses and infrastructure.

According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the incident occurred between March 5 and March 6 when a heavy rainfall was witnessed in the Moba, Ijero, Ado, and Ekiti East local government areas of Ekiti State

The affected communities have been visited by the Ekiti Operations Office of NEMA, in collaboration with Ekiti State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).

The NEMA team was led by ACSARO Abogunrin Adesina, while Ekiti SEMA was led by Alhaji Ademola Bello. Also on the ground to access the aftermath of the rainstorm were Red Cross officials and representatives from affected communities.

The assessment revealed that in Ijero Local Government Area, 136 buildings were partially damaged, and 64 rooftops were completely blown off, affecting 497 households.

Moba Local Government Area recorded 41 partially destroyed rooftops and 16 completely destroyed, with 157 households impacted.

In Ekiti East, 69 buildings were partially damaged, and 24 rooftops were completely destroyed, affecting 263 households.

In Ado Local Government Area, 87 houses were partially destroyed and 59 house had rooftops completely blown off.

In total, 496 buildings and 1,227 households were affected by the disaster.

Several public infrastructures, including electric poles, places of worship, and schools, were also severely damaged.

According to NEMA, despite the scale of destruction, no casualties were recorded.
