Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Sunday swore in the newly elected local government chairmen and their vice chairmen, urging them to deliver inclusive governance and not betray the trust of the people.
Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony, Sanwo-Olu described their election as a deeper call to selfless service, stressing that governance must reach every household in their communities.
He thanked the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the committees that worked to ensure the success of the local council elections.
“You were elected to serve the people, including those who may not have voted for you,” the governor said. “The people are looking for better roads, markets, schools, and youth engagement. These are not abstract expectations; they are tangible and measurable.”
Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of inclusive leadership, urging the new officials to provide impeccable service. He noted that the local councils play a critical role, especially as Lagos remains the backbone of the country’s economy.
“The buck now stops with you. Leadership must not be about personal gains. Lagos is counting on you to bring development to every street and community,” he stated. “Let the underserved communities feel your impact.”
He also emphasized the citizens’ right to accountability and transparency from their local leaders.
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs, and Rural Development, Mr. Bolaji Kayode, congratulated the newly elected chairmen and their deputies, describing their victories as a testament to their grassroots appeal and the confidence reposed in them by the electorate.
“The credibility of your emergence—anchored on transparency and broad-based support—has culminated in this swearing-in ceremony,” he said. He also lauded Governor Sanwo-Olu for his commitment to grassroots democracy and commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for laying the visionary foundation that continues to shape democratic institutions in Lagos and Nigeria at large.
Speaking on behalf of the newly sworn-in officials, Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki LCDA, Hon. Sesan Olowa, expressed gratitude to the governor and his deputy for their support, as well as to party leaders and members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) for their guidance during the elections.
“We are fully ready for this task,” Olowa pledged. “We give you our word—we will not let you down.”
