Committee of Chief Information Security Officers of Nigerian Financial Institutions (CCISONFI) has advocated the adoption of proactive strategies and innovations in cyber security to counter the brilliance and sophistication of cyber attackers.

At the CCISONFI conference 2024 in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State at the weekend, Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) of Zenith Bank and Chairman of CCISONFI, Festus Amede, said cyber attackers “have become more intelligent in their exploits,” engaging advanced and emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) to intensify the nature and dexterity of their attacks.

Amede said: “We need to future-proof against emerging cyber threats. Our ability to harness cutting-edge technologies such as generative AI, Machine learning, quantum-safe cryptography, zero trust security, biometrics, behavioural analytics, and cloud security in our strategy will make a difference.”

By integrating these advanced technologies, we build a safer financial ecosystem and can adapt to unforeseen threats of the future.”
Director of User & Data at Everfox, Michael Crouse, said some data breaches were not necessarily done on purpose but negligence or lack of awareness by employees.

In his paper, ‘Insider Threats; Persistence of Hackers and Fraudsters’, Crouse said it was important to dig deep into the root causes of data leaks from insider sources, and this might expose fault lines in the company’s technical controls that are not aligned to specific workflows, policies, processes or may even be outdated.

In a chat with journalists on the sidelines of the conference, the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Infodata Professional Services Global, Mr Chukwuma Udensi, commended the CISOs for boldly seeking ways to checkmate the activities of cybercriminals.

Commissioner of Police in charge of the National Cyber Crime Centre and Chairman of the Interpol African Working Group on Cybercrime, Ifeanyi Uche, said his office had been proactive in dealing with cyber security issues.

Wale Obadare of Digital Encode observed that the threats of digital transformation put the world at risk of a digital pandemic that might shut down the world in the manner that COVID-19 did.
