Ahead of the 11th Nigeria Energy Exhibition and Conference, diesel and petrol generator sets have posed a significant challenge to Nigeria’s ambitious energy transition as they produce 70 per cent of the total power sector emissions.
This is according to an analysis conducted by Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) in partnership with the Lagos State Government. Approximately 4.5 million fossil fuel generator sets are used in Lagos State. These emit 39 million metric tonnes of CO2 equivalent (tCO2e) per year, more than the combined emissions of Togo, Rwanda, and Gabon’s generators.
However, the energy conference is set to bring together key stakeholders to promote collaboration and accelerate West Africa’s transition to clean energy. The event organised by informa Markets will bring together over 6,500 participants, including industry leaders, investors, policymakers, and innovators to discuss the region’s most critical energy challenges and opportunities.
The event holding from October 15 to 17, at Landmark Center in Lagos, has the theme: ‘Breaking Barriers in the New Energy Era: Clean, Reliable, and Sustainable,’ .
The Exhibition is supported by its main sponsor SkipperSeil Limited, a global leader in power and infrastructure, and its gold conference sponsors, Genesis Energy and Tetracore Energy.
The event will focus on sustainable power generation, innovation, investment, and enhancing energy access across the region. By creating a platform for dialogue and partnership, the conference aims to drive efforts toward a greener, more sustainable future for West Africa.
The event would discuss topics like Sustainable power generation: Balancing profitability and environmental impact, Investing in Tomorrow: Navigating the $360 Billion Energy Transition, Blueprints for the Future: Gazetting Nigeria’s Energy Vision and Financing, Policy, and Innovation: The key ingredients for catalysing Nigeria’s conventional utility-scale projects ecosystem.
Exhibition Manager, Energy Portfolio – MEA, Informa Markets, Ade Yesufu during a press briefing in Lagos said the theme aims to promote West Africa’s clean energy transition while focusing on sustainable power generation, innovation, investment, and energy access.
He stressed that the conference would address the key obstacles hindering the clean energy transition in West Africa by focusing on policy and investment.
“The event will highlight the need for supportive government policies that incentivize renewable energy development and conventional power systems and address the critical challenge of attracting sufficient investment to fund large-scale clean energy projects.
“The Nigeria Energy Leadership Summit is a platform for dialogue, knowledge sharing, and collaboration among key stakeholders. By fostering open discussions, we aim to create a conducive environment for policy development, investment attraction, and technology adoption in the renewable energy sector and address the critical challenges of limited infrastructure capacity and inefficient quality to position Nigeria and West Africa as leaders in the transition to clean and sustainable energy sources,” he said.
Divisional Head, Skipper ETS Electric LTD, Sunil Kumar, said their partnership with Informa Market to sponsor the Nigeria Energy over the years and for the 11th edition highlights their over 20 years commitment to bringing the best minds in the energy industry together to ensure growth sustainability of the industry.
“For us, this event serves as a vital platform for fostering partnership’s and advancing solutions to Nigeria’s power sector challenges,” he said
Chief Operating Officer, Genesis Energy, Amina Lawal, said with their company’s vision of lighting up Africa one community at a time will be speaking more on their ability to identify, source, and originate clean energy businesses in Africa, attract financing, and manage executions of clean energy projects.
Yesufu added that, as part of its sustainability initiatives, Nigeria Energy will include the Energy-X Contest to identify and empower emerging leaders passionate about driving the energy transition in Nigeria, designed to nurture a culture of entrepreneurship among university students and young graduates, catalysing the development of groundbreaking ideas and ventures.
