The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) has inducted eight teachers with doctorate degrees, three masters, and 159 first degree holders into the Council in Akwa Ibom.

The Registrar of the Council, Prof. Addison Wokocha, made the disclosure on Thursday at the University of Uyo second induction ceremony in Uyo.

Wokocha said the teachers’ induction was aimed at improving the quality and status of both teachers and teaching in Nigeria.

He added that induction was one of the critical elements that made the teaching profession not to be an all-comers affair.

The registrar said that induction would also eliminate certificate forgery experienced in the teaching profession.

“The induction helps to eliminate certificate forgery plaguing the teaching profession. The Council receives the record of education graduates directly from universities and colleges of education and builds same into the robust data base for registered teachers in Nigeria.

“The data so captured is accessible to teachers’ employers and other stakeholders for ease of verification of claims made by prospective applicants and those already in the job.

“Induction enhances quality planning and administration of the teaching profession.

“It also confers legal and professional status on new teachers through the administration of the Teachers Oath of Allegiance as it also reduces attrition ration in the teaching profession.’’

The registrar explained that teaching required only those that were adequately prepared to be entrusted with the teaching-learning process in schools.

He warned that anyone who breached the professional conduct would be sanctioned.

Prof. Ignatius Uduk, the Dean, Faculty of Education, University of Uyo, said acquisition of teaching qualifications would not qualify a person to be a professional teacher until one was inducted by the Council.

Uduk then urged the inductees to be shining beacons in their various environments of practice and exhibit exemplary qualities to promote education in the country.
