President Bola Tinubu has condoled with the government and the people of Enugu State following a tragic fuel tanker explosion on Saturday that claimed at least 18 lives and left several others injured.
The incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. at the Ugwu Onyeama section of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.
A fuel tanker carrying fuel lost control while navigating the busy expressway, veering off its lane and colliding with multiple vehicles, triggering a massive fire.
The tanker was said to have collided with several other passenger vehicles, causing a devastating fire.
Eyewitnesses stated that no fewer than four private cars, four commuter buses, and two other tankers were engulfed in flames, with families and children reportedly burnt to ashes in the inferno.
They said the volume of flames prevented access to the area.
President Tinubu, on Sunday, through his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, commiserated with the families of the deceased and the injured and prayed for the repose of the souls of the departed and a quick recovery for those receiving medical treatment.
The President called for caution and adherence to safety measures among road users, particularly fuel tanker operators.
He also directed relevant agencies to enforce traffic rules and take necessary actions to prevent similar explosions across the country.
