Tinubu, Obasanjo, Okonjo-Iweala, reflect on late Kolade’s national legacy

President Bola Tinubu, Ex-President, Olusegun Obasanjo and the Director General of World Trade Organisation (WTO), Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, have paid their final tributes to the renowned broadcaster, diplomat, and corporate leader, Dr Christopher Kolade, who died at the age of 93.

Speaking at the Service of Songs and Night of Tributes held at the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts formerly National Theatre, Iganmu, President Tinubu, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, described him as an honorable and most distinguished man.

The President praised late Dr Kolade’s integrity, competence, and compassion, noting that his foundation’s work supporting those with sickle cell disease was truly impacting and inspiring.

Obasanjo, in his remark, said Dr Kolade was one of the real friends he had, whose commitment to national commitment was incomparable. While reflecting on his memories, he recalled that when the deceased served as High Commissioner to London during his administration’s efforts to secure debt relief, he demonstrated great commitment and support for the mission.

He also recalled that the late Kolade played a key role in founding the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential library alongside other notable trustees. Delivering her tribute virtually, Okonjo-Iweala also recalled that under President Goodluck Jonathan, he chaired the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P), providing support to communities during economic reforms.

She said: “Uncle Chris was a shining example of how to serve his fellow women and men. Whether in the public or private sector. His leadership in both sectors is much admired and regarded by most as best practice. Calm, dignified and cerebral, his comportment even in times of stress was one that we all wanted to emulate.”

Other dignitaries at the event include the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) is Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, among others who paid their glowing tributes to the deceased.
