Umahi pledges support for Buhari’s reforms
Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, yesterday, pledged support for President Muhammadu Buhari’s economic reforms, noting that critics would not discourage him from applauding the president’s policies.
The governor, who said this at the Abakaliki Township stadium during a solidarity rally by the town’s Urban Community Forum, debunked rumors making the rounds that he was perfecting plans to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He said that the challenge confronting his government is not party politics, but global economic meltdown, for which he cannot afford to lose the assistance of the Buhari-led federal government.
Noting that President Buhari is his only boss as a state governor, he said it would be wrong for him to oppose the president.
He, however, restated his resolve to remain in PDP to ensure that Ebonyi remains with the party.
According to him, “Many people, because of our support, respect for and relationship with the President have been wondering if we have moved over to APC. The answer is no. PDP is the answer and is where we would stay. It is the party to beat. It is the duty of every governor to respect the President because he is the only boss we have as governors and the second is the people. And so you do not tackle or disrespect your President.
“So our support for President is because our present challenge is not party politics, but global economic meltdown.
Because we have been cheated in the past, we need to support the President so that we can get our own share of the national cake to develop our people.”
He continued, “So, we will continue to support the President; we continue to work with him but we will continue to support our party.”
